Anopheles sacharovi mosquito found in Salento, but no alarm for possible return of malaria
The news has spread in recent days of the discovery, along the Salento coast between Lecce and Otranto, of a mosquito, Anopheles sacharovi, found in Italy after about 50 years from the last report. This mosquito, together with another species, Anopheles labranchiae, was associated with the transmission of malaria before the disease was eradicated from the country in 1970.
